A man from Ashington, Northumberland, is facing a likely prison sentence after admitting to storing thousands of indecent images of children on dozens of electronic devices over an 18-year period.

Hedley Watson, 59, of Essex Close, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing a prohibited image.

The court heard that police uncovered a total of 6,556 images and videos stored across 48 electronic devices, seized during a search of his homes in Ashington and Egremont, Cumbria, in October 2023.

The disturbing content was collected between June 2005 and October 2023, with more than 2,000 of the images and videos classed as Category A – the most serious type, depicting penetrative sexual activity involving minors.

Prosecutors stated that some of the children depicted were as young as five years old.

Due to the gravity of the offences, the case has been committed to Newcastle Crown Court for sentencing, where Watson will appear on June 12, 2025.

In the meantime, he has been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register by reporting to his nearest police station.

No additional mitigation was presented by Watson’s defence at the hearing.

Magistrates emphasised that the volume and seriousness of the material warranted sentencing in a higher court.

Authorities continue to highlight the critical importance of digital safeguarding, and encourage anyone who suspects online abuse to report it through the appropriate channels, including CEOP, NSPCC, or local police.
